Meet our Featured Artist - Nathalia Suizu

Hi Nathalia! Please tell us a little about who you are, where you're from and what you do?

I’m a self-taught Melbourne based artist, with a background in interior design. I was born in Brazil to Japanese-Italian parents, and have traveled extensively in my life - experiences that have been deeply transformative, shaping both my artistic vision and creative practice. I work predominantly in acrylic medium, my vibrant, maximalist paintings celebrate beauty and joy through bold colours, clashing patterns, rich textures, and sparkles.

Could you share the story behind your wonderful Tsuno artwork on our Regular
Pads?

I loved my experience collaborating with Tsuno and was immediately drawn to the ‘vessel’ motif as the foundation for my design. To me the vessel has strong symbolic and historic connections to the goddess and the sacred feminine; their archetypal round and hollow form echoing the womb - it felt like the perfect starting point for period art. Unique iterations of the vessel are repeated across the Tsuno box, forming a playful, pattern-like narrative that weaves together carefree dancing figures, birds in flight, mystical moons, and spirited eggs.

Could you share with us some of your favourite artworks or projects in your career thus far?

I love collaborations and the exciting opportunity they present for expanding art into new realms, whether that’s digital, textile, packaging etc. I thoroughly enjoyed my foray into fashion, when Erik Yvon asked me to contribute artwork for his NATEY collection in 2019. Creating pattern-based designs for their fabulous garments was an absolute thrill, made even more special by seeing them showcased on the Melbourne Fashion Week runway that same year. What an incredible high!

How do you navigate your creative practice and your menstrual cycle?

I’m very attuned to the signs that my period is approaching and generally try to slow-it-down during my monthlies. Creatively, I spend this time in ‘sketch’ mode rather than painting, which can be quite physically demanding — sometimes intensely so. I also make a conscious effort to stay especially well-hydrated and nourished during this time — craving beetroot is a thing for me.

What's been inspiring you this week?

I’m in preparation mode for a mid-year solo show with Fenton & Fenton, which will be an animal-themed affair. My Pinterest board in filling up with the most incredible, majestically coloured fauna — its definitely floating my inspo boat.
