DOES/WILL TSUNO SELL TAMPONS?
I’m dreaming, thinking and planning on it. The thing is, being a much riskier product to sell, tampons sing to a whole new score. Rightly so, they require an expensive certification process from the TGA (Therapeutic Goods Association).
Tsuno’s not quite big enough to be able to afford them at this stage, but I’d be lying if I said that sometimes I don’t count tampons in my sleep. Some day.
WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION FOR STARTING TSUNO?
The best answer to this question can be found here.
HAVE YOU HEARD OF THE MENSTRUAL CUP? WHY DON'T YOU SELL THOSE?
The short answer is yes. The menstrual cup was one of my inspirations for starting Tsuno. There’s a couple of reasons I don't sell them – menstrual cups are subject to expensive TGA certification, besides, there are so many great brands out there already being champions in that space. Also, due to their reusability, menstrual cups are great because of their limited impact on the environment but in running a social enterprise, a product someone buys once every ten years is no good as a profit maker. I sell pads because there are no other bamboo pads on the Australian market and there’s always a need for pads for personal, cultural and health reasons.
HOW DID YOU START TSUNO?
It was about a two-year process. The first year, I sat on the idea and finally got fed up with myself for never acting on any of my ideas. The second year involved doing a short small business course, writing a business plan to see if it was a viable notion, liaising with manufacturers, becoming an ambassador for One Girl to learn more about girls education and empowerment, taking part in the Do It In A Dress challenge, designing a crowd funding campaign with Pozible, raising $40,000 via crowd funding, ordering my first shipment of product, made a website to sell from, and talking about periods way too much. WHAT IS DO IT IN A DRESS?
Do It In A Dress is a brilliant initiative where you raise money by doing whatever you’re doing… in a school dress, putting your hand up as an advocate of girls’ education. To get involved, first you need to register at www.doitinadress.com, then create an online profile, plan your challenge, buy a dress, get fundraising and come October, step out in style. The approach backs a better life for girls in two of the worst places on earth to be born one: Sierra Leone and Uganda. A girl's income increases by at least 10% for every year she stays in school. She’ll get married later and have a smaller, healthier family.
WHAT WAS YOUR CHALLENGE?
For One Girl's annual fundraising challenge, I set myself the task of coping with my period the way women have to without access to sanitary products. Rags, newspaper, kitchen sponges, bark and leaves. Pulling dirty, itchy, stringy, bark from a tree was my last straw. I couldn’t do it. The difference was, I had alternatives. That’s when I decided to do something to help.
ARE YOU INSANE?
No, I’m in sanitary.
WHAT IS YOUR DREAM FOR TSUNO?
World wide period domination! Moo ha ha! (sits in dark corner rubbing hands together). Seriously though, I want Tsuno to greatly influence the feminine hygiene industry in Australia and abroad. By offering a range of sustainable, quality products that all women can use, I can direct money away from the large corporations currently controlling the market and give it to charities and initiatives working to make gender inequality and poverty history.
HOW DO YOU PRONOUNCE TSUNO?
Like you'd say ‘Tsunami’ but with an ‘oh’ at the end. And without the 'ami'...of course.
WHERE DO THE PROFITS GO?
I currently have an agreement to give 50% of net profits (the money remaining after all the expenses of running a business have been taken care of) to One Girl, please refer to the Giving page on this website for more info about why I have chosen to partner with them. Throughout the year, I also match pad donations to the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre, Share the Dignity and Essentials 4 Women SA, depending on their supply levels. If their levels are low, I encourage people to donate.
WHERE CAN I BUY TSUNO?
I WANT TO BUY TSUNO ONLINE, BUT I DON'T WANT A MIXED PACK OR 3 PACK OF THE SAME TYPE, CAN I CHOOSE MY OWN COMBINATION?
Not every period is created equal. Let me customise your pad combo to pander to your period by tapping me out a message in the notes section of the checkout.
HOW LONG WILL MY ORDER TAKE TO ARRIVE?
I pack all the orders myself twice a week and send them via Australia Post. It could be anywhere between 3 to 10 days depending on where you live in Oz. A tracking number will be emailed to you when the package has been sent.
WHERE ARE YOUR PADS MANUFACTURED?
Tsuno pads are manufactured in an ISO 9001 2008 certified factory in China, which our director Roslyn Campbell has visited to view conditions. We are working with our suppliers to ensure compliance with SA8000 as it relates to health & safety, equal opportunities and diversity; ISO14000 as it relates to environmental management, all within the framework of an audit as part of Sedex membership.
